February 15, 2010 UPDATE – iNum now supports SMS
A long awaited feature: SMS (short messaging service) is now supported on the iNum numbers.
Wireless subscribers from a growing number of carriers – including Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange, Virgin, and Boost Mobile – now are able to text these numbers.
The service is already available in the United Kingdom, France and the United States, at prices ranging from 10 to 20 pence per message in the U.K., for example. We are working on expanding the reachability from more wireless carriers in more countries.
We need your help in verifying reachability from as many wireless carriers as possible. In whatever country you are please try sending an SMS to our test number +883 510 000 000 094 and let us know how it goes and what rate you are experiencing.
Thanks !
==========
UPDATE 1: As can be seen from some of the comments, the global reachability is far from complete yet. The reachability from wireless networks is expected to grow on a weekly basis, and we will add a reach list on the iNum website as soon as possible.
UPDATE 2: In order to verify whether an SMS was successfully received by our test number (+883 510 000 000 094), please include your email address in the content of the SMS message.
If the test was successful you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive a confirmation email after sending your test SMS it means that we did not receive your SMS message.
UPDATE 3: Please spread the word, and please contact your wireless carrier if the test fails.
The more people try to send SMS messages from their wireless carrier, and the more people complain to their wireless carrier when it does not work, the faster the reachability will increase.
Thank you !

@Andrew
Thanks for testing. Please include your email address in the body of the SMS message and if we receive the SMS successfully we will send you an email confirmation

@Alexander @Rykel
We will contact all failing carriers one by one (including Skype and Google), but it will take some time to get the reachability completed.
If you can spend some time to contact the carriers and complain about the failing SMS, this will greatly help in speeding this up.
Thanks !

I sent an SMS yesterday from Telus Mobility in western Canada. They charged their normal rate for an International message, however I haven’t had any response or indication that it went through. Can someone at iNUM verify? My phone number is 1250888xxxx.

I sent an SMS via Elisa Estonia and it did not arrive. While I am currently roaming in Singapore, I believe the message was sent via the Elisa SMSC anyway.
Furthermore I tried sending from SingTel (prepaid) here in Singapore. The SMS was immediately rejected without being sent.

I have tried to send an SMS in the Netherlands with Ben (T-Mobile) as provider. According to my phone sending the SMS was successful, but I have had no confirmation e-mail and so far I have seen no (special) charge for the SMS.

I’ve sent sms to 883510000000094 using both + and 011 in front of number and even without + or 011 from the new Telus HSPA network in Canada (Telus Mobility runs 3 networks simultaneously: CDMA, HSPA and IDEN). The sms did not go through.
“Your message to 883510000000094 could not be delivered because the mobile number is invalid or could not be connected.”

The SMS went through from the 2degrees Mobile network in New Zealand and they charged 20ct for it, although it should only be 9ct.
I have contacted them to get it corrected.
As well it looks like SMS from the pennytel.com.au TXT interface is working as well.
My question would be:
If I send a SMS to my own iNum number, should it show on my SIP phone or how is this handled ?
Cheers
Thorsten

@ Thorsten, the SMS is sent using the SIP message format, so we need to work with soft client & sip mobile software vendors to see ensure clients will interpret and present the SMS correctly.
@ James – excellent! Thanks 2 you both for the insightful comments & support for iNum
